You may earn a maximum of 3 points toward your final grade by doing the above and answering the questions and submitting them on time (no later than Sunday, February 25 on or before 12:01am). Any worksheets submitted after the deadline will get a 0.
You will be rewarded a maximum of 3 points if I judge your work to be above average. You will receive 2 points if your work is average, that is it may have a few minor mistakes in some of the answers but demonstrates correct grammar and indicates that some, but not all, of the answers, are acceptable and well expressed. You will earn only 1 point if you simply answered the questions and/or if you use poor grammar and if there are signs that you have not read the material on which your answers are based.

1. Describe the stasis in the play: where, when, who, what, etc. in a paragraph.
The play opens up and it is an early summer evening in Maryland. We have Lil Bit and her uncle in a car. The uncle is named Uncle Peck. We can already tell there is something off about their relationship. The play seems to be set in late 90's with the way they talk to one another. The two are flirting and enjoying their time together off some beaten path in the car.

2. What is the intrusion?

The intrusion happens almost as soon as we meet the characters. Uncle Peck starts to be known as a pedophile. He asks to feel up Lil Bit and he keeps making awkward advances towards her. This immediately sets the tone for the rest of the play.

3. What is the unique factor?

The Unique factor is that an underage Lil Bit is having an inappropriate sexual relationship with her uncle, Uncle Peck.

4. What is the dramatic question that should be answered by the end of the play?

Will Lil Bit and Uncle Peck wind up together? Will she ever be free from him? Will Lil Bit lose her virginity to Uncle Peck? Does she want to be free from him? Is he in love with Lil Bit or is he a pedophile? Will the family notice and if they do will they say anything?

5. Provide an illustration of the two kinds of exposition that the play has in it.

1.) Information known to all or most of the characters:
Lil Bit and Uncle Peck are claiming that when they go off in the car he is only teaching her to drive. That is a big theme because it is the title of the play itself. Though he is doing that, he is also using that time as an excuse to feel her up and make sexual advancements towards her while she is underage. He is in reality grooming her to become his pet or his lover in reality. You can see the build up to her 18th birthday.

2.) Information only known to one character:
Uncle Peck actually had an inappropriate relationship with a little boy before he turned his attention to Lil Bit. Uncle Peck's Wife, Aunt Mary, makes a comment in the play about how he is good with kids once they reach the age that Lil Bit is, which is 17. Once we get these to parts of information we realize that uncle Peck is a pedophile and not just because he fell in love with someone underage but because he is a repeat offender.

6. Identify the most theatrical moment in the play and of what importance it seems to be.

The most theatrical moment for me was when Lil Bit decided to tell Uncle Peck to leave her alone. He comes to visit her for her 18th birthday and she realizes that he has been grooming her and counting down the days until she is of legal age and not considered a minor. This moment truly shows Lil bit's independence from Uncle Peck. She really grows into herself and says I am my own woman and you do not control me anymore. It was a very empowering end to a very manipulative relationship. In the past relationships like that always seem to destroy the abused but in this story it seems to have destroyed the abuser.

7. List some of the themes of the play.

Family, Relationships, growth, pedophilia, cars, children, etc.

8. Choose the character of Li'l Bit in the show and articulate what she wants and what are some obstacles that stand in the way of her getting what she wants?

Lil Bit seems to really want her true self. Throughout the entire play she encounters many obstacles. One major obstacle is her family sexualizing her because she has big boobs. There are the obstacles of gender roles. Her grandfather makes her feel worthless unless she is "laying on her back." through this though we also have her growth. She seems to just allow Uncle Peck to take advantage of her even though she does not want that. I think through going through all of these obstacles and from removing herself to a new environment when she goes to college. She learns about herself. She is able to see the abuse for what it was for so long and actually make a choice that is 100% for her. This is the first time she is actually able to do that.

9. Describe some possible images in the play and how does the title help us understand the play.

The Title of the play is "how I learned to drive" This is major symbolism because it directly ties back to the main theme which is her relationship with her uncle. Her uncle taught her how to drive and though she benefited from that she also lost her innocence to him. He took advantage of her and slowly groomed her to think he loved her and that it was okay. So I think this is a major theme that ties those two parts together but also represents how she learned so much more. She learned how to become herself, how to drive, how to remove unwanted relationships, how to stand up for herself etc. This gives us an actual idea of who lil bit was, how she got there, and who she has become. Some more images are the car, the little boy Uncle Peck took advantage of, the library, etc.

10. Briefly define the family relationships that are examined in the play.

There is family by blood which is shown with Lil Bit and her family. We also have family by marriage which is Peck and his wife, Lil Bit's aunt, Mary. Then we have inappropriate family connections which is represented by Peck and his relationship with Lil Bit. These are the main family relationships represented throughout the story line.
